The AP* Summer Institute (APSI) at Rice University offers challenging AP and Pre-AP professional development courses and Academies that address advanced topics in AP. The institute is administered by the Susanne M. Glasscock School of Continuing Studies and endorsed by the Southwest Region of the College Board. Now in it's 22nd year, APSI has grown to become one of the largest in the country and attracts teachers from across Texas, the United States and other countries. Course Faculty: Courses are led by experienced, enthusiastic and dedicated College Board-endorsed lead consultants who have a broad range of knowledge and proven ability presenting to their peers. Faculty for 2016 include AP test development committee members, AP exam readers, winners of special recognition awards from the College Board, and winners of regional and national teaching awards. When: Each course meets Tuesday through Friday of its given week, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
Where: Courses are held on the Rice University campus.
Tuition: $499 per course ($549 after May 6). Tuition includes College Board Exam Resources and Special Focus books or the AP* Vertical Teams Guides for Pre-AP* participants, course binder, parking and lunch.
Payments are accepted by credit card or purchase order. Registrations via credit card are confirmed immediately upon processing. Registrations made via PO are not considered confirmed until CCR receives the actual payment (check). If registering using a PO, payment (check) is due within 30 days of registration. Failure to submit timely payment may result in the cancellation of your registration.
Professional Development Credits: Participants will receive up to 30 hours of Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits or 3.0 Continuing Education Units (CEU). SBEC Continuing Professional Education Provider Number 500571
Acknowledgment of enrollment: Once your completed enrollment is received, you will either be enrolled in the course or placed on a waiting list if the course has filled. In either case, you will receive written notification from Rice at your home address within 15 days of receipt of your registration. Please contact our office, 713-348-6031, if you do not receive notification from us. You may need to check with your school or district administrative office to ensure the registration was sent.
IMPORTANT: Please do not book travel until enrollment is confirmed.
Housing: Housing is available on campus and at a local hotel. See details and hotel information.
Air travel: Those making plane reservations should choose departure times after 7 p.m. on the last day of the Institute. See Traveling to Houston for more information.
Meals: Lunch will be served on campus daily and is included in the cost of tuition.
Clothing and climate: Dress for class sessions is casual and comfortable. Because summer days in Houston are hot and humid, light clothing is essential. However, all of the buildings at Rice University are well air-conditioned, and because some can even be quite cold, please pack a sweater or a cover-up.
Clothing for science teachers: Biology and chemistry teachers must follow Rice University's lab safety rules by wearing closed-toe shoes (no sandals), long pants or skirts, laboratory coats and goggles during all lab activities. Please bring a lab coat and goggles with you to the Institute. Anyone not following these rules will be asked to leave the lab and hours will be deducted from their certificate, so please plan accordingly.
