  • RHS Frequently Asked Questions

How do I request an application?

    • Applications are available online and by mail. Visit our Web site to download an application. Or give us your name and address either by e-mail at school@rice.edu or by phone at 713.348.4767 and we will mail an application to you within a week or e-mail it to you as an attachment.
    • Download the PDF application. This form is fillable using Adobe Acrobat.

    Who is eligible to apply?

    • Students who will be juniors or seniors in the fall of 2012 are eligible for this program. We cannot accept applications from students who will be freshmen or sophomores.

What will I have to submit with my application?

    • In addition to the application form itself, we will need:
      • Copies of all your high school transcripts
      • One teacher and one counselor recommendation (forms included in the application packet)
      • PSAT, SAT I or ACT with writing scores
      • $75 application fee
      See Application Checklist for details.

Will you notify me when my application is complete?

    • Yes, you will be notified at the e-mail address you provided on your application form when your application is complete.

    Is financial aid available?

    • The Glasscock School of Continuing Studies will offer a limited number of full scholarships, including tuition and books, to academically-qualified students who demonstrate financial need. The determination of need will be based on eligibility for free and reduced school lunch programs. See the application for instructions on how to apply for a scholarship.

How many courses can I take?

    • RHS students are limited only to one course. You may indicate on your application form a first and second choice, and we will enroll you in your first choice if space allows. Rice courses are rigorous, and students should be prepared to spend adequate time studying out of class to succeed in the course. Course instructors will not make special accommodations or concessions for high school students as the intent of this program is to provide an undiluted Rice course experience.

How do I choose a course?

What is the tuition for Rice for High School Students? Are there other fees?

    • The tuition for each Rice for High School Students course is $949 per credit hour, and courses are typically 3 or 4 credit hours.  This would be $2,847-3,796.  Books are not included in the tuition.  A $200 tuition deposit is required upon your acceptance into the program in order to hold your space.  Details will be provided if you are admitted.

When can I expect to hear about my admission status?

    • Admissions decisions will be mailed on or around April 30.

    Is housing available?

    • The Rice for High School Students program is not a residential program. Therefore, no on- or off-campus housing is available. Students must also provide their own transportation to and from the Rice campus.
