  • General Information 2012

    Saturday-Sunday, October 6-7, 2012 

    When: Classes will be held from 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Houston is in the Central time zone.

    Where: The workshops meet on the Rice University campus in Houston, Texas.

    Participants will receive up to 15 hours of Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits or 0.6 Continuing Education Units (CEU).

    Tuition: $725 ($770 after September 7). Tuition includes breakfast and lunch.

    Required Materials: Refer to the course description for further details.

    • Category 2 participants are required to bring their own subject guide to the workshops. A subject guide will be provided for Category 1 participants.
    • In combined Category 1/2 workshops, subject guides will be provided to all participants.
    • Coordinators, please bring a copy of the "Handbook of Procedures." A few copies will be available to those that are unable to get one before the start of the workshops. These materials may be brought either as electronic files downloaded to laptops or as hard copies.

    Air travel: We strongly recommend arriving in Houston the day before your workshop begins as registration starts at 7:00 a.m. on the first day of the workshop. You should choose departure times after 7:00 p.m. on the last day of the session to allow adequate time for travel to the airport. Travel time to Hobby Airport is approximately 30 minutes; travel time to Bush Intercontinental Airport is approximately one hour. To review Houston airport information please go to fly2houston.com.

    Airport transportation: Transportation to and from the airport can be arranged through SuperShuttle at supershuttle.com or 800-BLUE-VAN (258-3826). Prices range from $23 one-way from Hobby Airport to $27 one-way from Bush Intercontinental Airport. Additionally, taxi transportation can be arranged starting at $27 from Hobby Airport and $51 from Bush Intercontinental Airport.

    Parking: You must contact us in advance if you plan to park on campus to ensure that an adequate number of free parking validations will be available.


    Meals: Breakfast and lunch will be provided each day of the workshop. Breakfast will be served from 7:00 to 8:00 a.m. Additionally, a convenience store and coffee shop are located in the Rice Memorial Center (see the campus map).

    Clothing and climate: Dress for class sessions is casual and comfortable. Wear comfortable shoes for frequent walks between buildings during lunch and breaks. Houston in October is warm, with an average temperature of 80 degrees, and you may wish to bring an umbrella for occassional rain. Additionally, all buildings at Rice University are well air-conditioned, some can even be quite cold; therefore, please pack a sweater or a jacket.


    Acknowledgment of Enrollment: Once your completed registration form is received, you will either be enrolled in the course or placed on a waiting list if the course has filled. In either case, you will receive written notification from Rice at your home address within 15 days of receipt of your registration. Please contact our office, 713-348-6031, if you do not receive notification from us. You may need to check with your school or district administrative office to ensure the registration was sent.

    Special needs: Most classrooms are accessible for all participants. However, some classrooms in older buildings may be inaccessible for people who use wheelchairs and/or other aids for mobility.
